Sixteen Carlebach melodies you can play while you are still learning to read notes. Every note has its letter printed inside it, the melody sits in the right hand alone, and under each song the chords are drawn as keyboard diagrams with the keys marked and named. You read the letter, you find the key, and Am Yisrael Chai is already sounding.

Not sure the format suits you? Am Yisrael Chai is available on its own at no charge, written exactly the way the whole book is written. Download it, try it at the piano, and decide from there.

How the music is written

The letter is inside the note

Every notehead carries its own name, so there is no counting lines and spaces before you can start. The notes still stand on a proper staff, so your eye gets used to where each one lives while you play.

One hand at a time

The melody is written for the right hand alone. Nothing is happening on a second staff that you have to co-ordinate with.

Chords you can see

Under each song the chords are drawn as small keyboards with the keys to press shaded and labelled. A chord becomes something you look at rather than something you have to have learned.

Carlebach, not a watered-down version of him

Am Yisrael Chai, Esa Einai, Mimkomcha, Lema’an Achai, Shifchi Kamayim, Lord Get Me High. The melodies are the ones people sing at a tisch and around a Shabbos table, written plainly so a beginner can reach them, and still recognisable from the first bar. Each piece has its tempo marked, its repeats and its endings, so what you learn here is how music is really written down.

Who it is for

Beginners at the piano, children and adults

Music you actually want to play, from the first weeks of learning.

Piano teachers

Sixteen familiar tunes at a level a new student can finish, rather than one more exercise to be talked into.

Anyone who never learned to read notes

The letters carry you through the first pieces, and reading comes quietly along the way.

Questions people ask

I can barely read music. Can I really play from this book?

Yes. That is what the book is for. Every note has its letter printed inside it, so you read the letter, find the key and play. Nothing has to be worked out first.

What is written on the page?

A right-hand melody on one staff, with the letter name inside each note, chord names above the music and a tempo mark at the start. Under every song there are keyboard diagrams showing exactly which keys make up each chord.

What does the left hand play?

The chords shown in the diagrams. Each diagram is a picture of the keyboard with the keys to press marked and named, so a chord is something you can see rather than something you have to know.

Are these the real Carlebach melodies?

Yes, the tunes as they are sung, only written simply. The book is easy to play, not watered down to something you would not recognise.

What exactly do I get?

One A4 PDF of 18 pages with 16 arrangements, delivered as an instant download after purchase. Each song is titled in English and in Hebrew. Print it at home or have it bound.

Is it suitable for a child?

It is. Children who have just started piano manage these pieces, and so do adults who are learning to read notes for the first time.

Instant download.
